Conlusion/Inference on Smartboards in the classroom
Through extensive interviewing, we have come to the realization that smart boards have many advantages, but it’s a technological tool, that many professors need a tutorial on. However, the usage of smart boards is effective in its various ways to teach, but it’s to most professors, just a “shinny tool” that doesn’t enhance the learning within a classroom. Being that the Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics departments, all have smart boards; many of the professors do not use them frequently within their studies. Most professors believe the old method of reading a textbook is more effective than a technological tool with in the classroom. So, are smart boards a waste of money? Yes and no, they serve as a more effective way to grasp the audiences attention, but through our research, professors are as clueless of all the usages or purposes the smart board can be used. In order, to change the mindset of teachers and students within a classroom learning environment, there will have to be more than just a flashy board. Some professors believed that the smart board would be more helpful, if they had tablets that engaged the students into what they are writing on the boards. Based on society being very technological savvy, tablets that co-exist with the board itself would allow for the students to pay a greater deal of attention.
Furthermore, the research conducted and finding reliable sources that was not secondary schooling and on a college level, left for furthermore information. Based upon smart boards being used in secondary schools, our research targeted toward higher level learning in college hit a marking point for our research. We not only found out that there were barely sources that indicated that colleges use smart boards, but it changed the game far as education is concerned. It changes the perspective that as a higher level educator, they can still not be educated on the tools of using the technology that we have made part of our home within the classrooms. For many colleges who are in departments with these smart efficient boards, we learn that they are taking the concept of technology as perhaps a mere joke instead of making it more effective toward their learning. Because smart boards are a brand, many professors would indicate, what’s the difference from a regular white board? This proves a fact that they are not well equipped with the technology that they need for their students who are born in the technology era. Being a well-educated professor with a tool as the smart board should have given these professors a more in-depth analysis on how to make their students even more interested in their typical lectures. Of course, through many of the interviews, we here that the professors have not been taught how to use this technology, but through extensive research on our group’s research, we found out that there are classes and seminars that inform the professors how to use the technology. So, perhaps it’s not just the technology, but the lack of communication or lack of interest in learning the effectiveness of the technology.
Although, our study was in favor of the smart board, we found out that it was not only costly, but perhaps a waste of money. Thanks to the study of these professors, we learned that not only are pen and paper useful, but regardless of technology, the learning is still the same. For the students who are more visual, smart boards are helpful, but for the general audience, it serves no purpose within the classroom nor will it benefit in any way other than another distraction. Smart boards did not fully work in our favor, but are opening the eyes to perhaps learning more about it for more extensive research. Now, that we have linked the idea of technology and learning together with our research of the smart board, many professors are thinking on a wider scale of how they would want to begin learning how these smart boards are effectively used to perhaps increase student learning and engagement. As a group we were fortunate to pick a topic that was however not analysis before, but a topic that most professors have, but know nothing about. As a research group we researched with a blank canvas and found out a total outcome that can be further researched down the line from now. Nonetheless, although we were blind to the research or how it was going to be gained, we realized the greater research and that was being young researchers and shedding light on topics that perhaps were discussed, but lost interest in research. This research had given many other solutions and possibilities beyond the typical thought of being affective within classrooms, lectures, but perhaps could be used within home settings. Overall, the knowledge we’ve gained through this research has opened a new door for technology.
