b. A brief description of the research design: Qualitative, semi-structured
indepth interviews.
Have you conducted a statistical power analysis?
2. Have you determined the sample size needed?
This is a qualitative pilot study and we are a group of student researchers so this is not applicable.
If you need assistance, go to http://www.psycho.uni-duessledorf.de/aap/projects/gpower/ or consult your advisor and a statistical textbook.
3. If you have not conducted a power analysis or determined
the sample size needed for statistical significance (inadequate numbers), then you must state your study is a "Pilot Study" in the Title of your project.
C. A brief description of your proposed data analysis:
(T-test, chi-square, correlation, ANOVA, MANOVA, Regression, Discriminant Analysis, etc.) We will not be analyzing the data for the aforementioned
research.
7. Describe in detail the research procedure related to
subjects’ participation; minimally, the following information must be included:
8. How will the subject(s) be selected and/or recruited?
(Append copy of letter and/or transcript of verbal announcement).
A letter was hand delivered to the Chairs of the Computer
Sciences, Biology, Math and Computer Engineering Departments asking for their respective faculty participation on a voluntary basis. The chairmen signed individual copies of the letter to be included with this application. An invitation will be sent to the faculty at-large asking them to consider assisting students with a research project in the area of education and technology. We will conduct in-depth interviews at each department at the discretion of the Chairman (to be set within five to ten working days of the approval of this IRB). We will set up for 90 minutes at each department at which time participants may come and participate one at a time in a video and audio taped interview lasting no more than fifteen minutes to twenty minutes.
Do you supervise, teach, or have direct contact with the participants you plan to recruit? Research conducted with persons whom you have an established relationship could be coercive in nature and represent a conflict of interest. NO
What inducement is offered, if any?
We will provide complimentary breakfast goods for the
department. Everyone will have access to the inducement regardless of
participation.
d) Number and salient characteristics of subjects, i.e.,
age range, sex, institutional affiliation, other pertinent characterization(s).
We will conduct a minimum of three interviews at each location for a total of nine interviews for the project.
The basic demographic information will be obtained at the
beginning of each interview. The participant will fill out a short biographical information form prior to the start of oral interviews.
e) If a cooperating institution (school, hospital, prison, etc.) is involved, prior written permission must be obtained. (Append approval letter.)
f) Number of times observations will be made or instruments
administered?
A minimum of three single interviews at three different
departments for a total of nine.
g) What do the subject’s do, or what is done to them, in the study (method of
recruitment and how you will collect the consent and the data)?
We have a oral and written consent form which will be reviewed and signed prior to the commencement of each interview. Each interviewee will have the option of allowing either audio or video (or both) taping of the interview. They will have the option of not being audiotaped during these interviews, the consent forms will indicate the voluntary nature of this project.
1. You must append a copy of questionnaires or test
instruments.
2. Description of procedure using the participant in your
study.
h) How is it made clear to the subject that their
participation is fully voluntary? We have provided a disclaimer at the beginning of our form which restates the voluntary nature of the interview and we also provide an opt-out clause at any point during the course of the interview/How is it made clear to the subject that they may withdraw at any time? (Use the language of the consent/assent form.) Please refer to attached consent/assent form.
1. How is it made clear to the subjects that they may refuse to answer any specific question that may be asked of them? "If at any time you
feel uncomfortable and feel you may wish to discontinue or move on to the next question please feel free to say "I (you) would like to move on or (I) you wish to discontinue".
2. Cite your experience with this type of research. Student applications must
include their own experience, as well as, the advisor’s research experience.
Student experience: This will be the first research project
for every member of this team.Faculty experience: Dr. Monica Flippen-Wynn is an experienced researcher who has presented papers and has been published at an academically professional level. She is our instructor in Research Methods and serves as our advisor on this protocol.
8. How do you intend to obtain the subjects’ informed consent? If in writing, attach a copy of the consent form. If not in writing, include a summary of what is said (Oral script) to the participant(s) and justify, if necessary, the reasons that an oral rather than a written consent is being used. Also explain how you will ascertain that the subjects understand what they are agreeing to. Please refer to the attachment labeled Assent/Consent/Interview
form.
9. Justify:
a. Why do you need to use human subjects in this research? Since our
research seeks to explore the educational use of technology (specifically
smartboards) and their effectiveness, our best source of experience in this area relies on academicians. Since their experience differs from professor to professor, the data will be somewhat subjective in nature. There is virtually no way to determine an educators experience of technology without interacting with human subjects enrolled in the practice of teaching.
Has your topic been research previously? (Consider if your
research could be completed with secondary data.) There is very little
published in this area either because the technology modality is rather new or because there simply hasn’t been a broader discussion of which tools may be more efficacious in the classroom.
b. How will your research add to the body of scientific
literature?
It will add to the ever-increasing scholarly research on technology and
student engagement and offer an opportunity for first-time student researchers to add to the body of literature. This information can lead to a more effective and efficient use of resources in the class room and a more effective allocation of budget resources.
10. a. What are the benefits gained by the individual for
participation in your project? (Remember, most research is conducted for the benefit of the researcher and the participants receive no benefits unless they are involved in treatment or clinical trial research.)
Teachers (and their students) always benefit from a more robust debate of pedagogical methods. In an era of publish or perish’ how else are educators supposed to find better ways of imparting information than research? This is a much more effective means of advancing changes than the sort of ‘hit or miss’ approach which only produces results after years of toiling in the classroom.
Professors will also get a chance for a welcome break from a rushed schedule to enjoy refreshments and to engage in research with students who are extremely interested in learning. Again, it is a break from a routine for both parties!
b. Do you see any chance that subjects might be harmed in any way?
NO
c. Are there any physical risks? NO
d. Psychological risks? (Might a subject feel demeaned or
embarrassed or worried or upset? All research has some psychological risk.)
NO
e. Social? (Possible loss of status, privacy, reputation?)
NO
11. Do you deceive them in any way? If yes, explain why deception is justified and provide information about how the participants will be debriefed about your project. NO
12. How do you ensure confidentiality of the information
collected? The professor and the department of mass communications will secure these documents and store them for a minimum of three years at Jackson State University.
13. STUDENT APPLICATIONS ONLY: Has your committee reviewed
and approved your proposal prior to submitting your IRB application?
We are student researchers, but we have provided our instructor with the
contents of this document.
14. STUDENT APPLICATIONS ONLY:
Our instructor, Dr. Monica Flippen-Wynn has reviewed the IRB application
prior to submission.
JSU-ORA-IRB-6-10
